May is recognized as Brain Cancer Awareness Month, dedicated to increasing public understanding of brain tumors and supporting research for better treatment options. In 2024, approximately 25,400 individuals in the United States were diagnosed with cancers of the brain or central nervous system, highlighting the critical need for continued awareness and advancements in medical research. 

During this month, we honor the memory of Master Firefighter Andrew Jenks of the Lynchburg Fire Department. Andrew, affectionately known as "Jenks" among his colleagues, dedicated 15 years to serving the Lynchburg community. He was first diagnosed with cancer three years prior and valiantly continued his service until his passing on July 6, 2024, at the age of 37. Andrew's unwavering commitment to his duty and his courageous battle against brain cancer serve as an enduring inspiration to all.
